Acting at different program and project scales to make transit networks more accessible

Access Planning has been providing accessible design expertise for transit networks across different jurisdictions and systems, from Vancouver to Quebec, since its inception. Some recent project examples are provided below.

As an embedded consultant for TransLink's Access Transit team, we support continuous improvements to the agency's HandyDart service, including updates to policy frameworks and engagement processes based on strong objectives and principles.

We represented TransLink in coordinating a multidisciplinary team of accessibility experts, transit architects, and landscape architects for the review of key Broadway Subway Station designs. This review resulted in updates to the station designs and will guide systemic accessibility improvements for future projects.

In 2023, Access Planning facilitated an internal review of Québec City’s transit agency Réseau de Transport de la Capitale (RTC) approach to making their bus network 100% accessible, laying out strategies and tactics to respond to shifting timelines and stakeholder input.

We believe that making transit an attractive and viable option for citizens with mobility needs requires a holistic approach. This approach should include interventions at all levels, from governance and engagement to station plan reviews and major project design guidance recommendations. We always keep the user’s perspective in mind and seek opportunities to collaborate with groups with lived expertise.
