Setting mobility hubs up for success

Mobility hubs are increasingly becoming an essential tool for cities and agencies aiming to make sustainable modes of transport an attractive and reliable choice while addressing the role of different nodes in the mobility network. These hubs have a positive impact by improving first/last-mile connectivity, reducing motorization and supporting the mobility needs of neighbourhoods within a 15-minute radius.

The development of a mobility hub strategy can be led by various actors, such as local governments and mobility providers, and can take multiple approaches. Access Planning has supported municipal and transit agencies in Quebec in developing their mobility hub strategy, building on our previous work on station access strategies and active transportation network development.

In 2022, Access Planning guided the Agence de Mobilité Durable (AMD) in Montréal and its municipal partners in laying down the groundwork for the phased implementation of a network of mobility hubs. Through generative workshops and peer agency research, we developed a shared definition, objectives, typologies, a prioritization framework, and implementation tactics.

In 2023, Access Planning supported the Société de Transport de l’Outaouais (STO) in Gatineau in developing an approach towards mobility hub definition and goals that are relevant to the context of a potential future tramway project, providing the agency with a sequenced and prioritized roadmap.
