Framing municipal expectations and opportunities to guide successful integration of transit systems

Successful integration of transit projects in cities depends on a dialogue between key partners. The City of Toronto developed a Transit Design Guide (TDG) across two phases of work to enable consistent guidance for integrating transit into its surrounding communities. As transit project delivery expands to include increasingly more actors, the Guide provides clarity around the City’s design expectations and requirements. The guide speaks to the transitory spaces between transit operations and urban spaces by referencing existing design documents and filling in gaps to create high-quality door-to-door travel experiences for users.

Access led the development of the TDG as a tool for the City to use for expectations management and dialogue with its partners. Our team put heavy emphasis on both the process of developing the Guide as well the final product itself. Our approach, in collaboration with our trusted partners, brought the TDG to life through the provision of project management, strategic advice, interagency engagement, urban design, and transit planning services to the city. The Guide was officially launched at the beginning of 2022.
