Evaluating options for connecting UBC campus to the SkyTrain network

TransLink is planning the next stage of the Millennium Line SkyTrain Extension. The seven-kilometer extension will run west from Arbutus Street to the University of British Columbia (UBC) along the busy West Broadway Avenue corridor. Several options for alignment were being explored that could potentially have a wide range of both positive and negative impacts on campus and community planning. Access Planning was hired by UBC as an advisor in the alignment planning process and to better communicate the benefits of an on-campus Skytrain to students, faculty, staff, residents, and visitors.

Through Access Planning's extensive experience in leading consensus-building conversations, we have helped UBC investigate potential options for bringing SkyTrain to campus. This work helped UBC to weigh options such as where to best place stations and whether the alignment will run above ground, at-grade, underground, or in any combination of these options. The benefits of each option were placed against a careful assessment of potential constraints and costs, resulting in preferences that UBC can provide to TransLink to inform their planning process.

Bringing SkyTrain to UBC is a crucial project that will enhance connectivity for generations, and Access is proud to have supported UBC in ensuring the best possible outcome. An initial concept of station locations was presented and endorsed by the Mayors’ Council. TransLink is currently undertaking technical planning work.
