Enhancing active transportation & intermodality across Montreal’s Saint Lawrence River

The greater Montreal region's regional transport authority (ARTM) is currently undertaking a three-year funded project to improve and expand the service of their cross-river shuttle network between on-and off-island communities in order to improve multi-modal accessibility across the Saint Lawrence River. Access was enlisted to support the ARTM's reflections of the multimodal connections to and from river shuttle locations.

Our team analyzed the active and public transport networks adjacent to the river shuttle docks in three City of Montréal boroughs, as well as three south shore municipalities, to understand where improvements could be made to existing infrastructure, wayfinding and other supportive amenities. A customer-experience lens was applied to the analysis in order to reflect on how the shuttle network and active transportation connections could be accessible to even the most vulnerable users in society. The analysis phase was followed-up by a series of tactical recommendations for short-term implementation as well as medium-term strategies in each of the communities in question to build towards more robust and long-lasting solutions in the future.
