Leading the project definition and alignment strategy for the UBC SkyTrain Extension

Access Planning led the scoping and planning for the future $3 billion SkyTrain extension to UBC. We directed a multi-agency engagement process to establish the project’s core objectives, evaluate alignment options, and define the strategy for linking Metro Vancouver with the province’s second-largest employment centre.

TransLink needed a clear foundation for this once-in-a-generation investment through objectives grounded in regional priorities, alignment concepts that balanced ridership, cost, and community impact, and a decision-making framework capable of holding up under political, public, and technical scrutiny. Access was tasked with building this foundation and creating the structured evaluative program that synthesized inputs from engineering, economics, land development, and Indigenous partners.

We guided TransLink and its partners through a multi-year process to define goals, identify affected communities, and translate them into a suite of viable rapid transit alternatives. This included developing and evaluating alignment and station concepts, testing performance, assessing costs and benefits, and defining the business case pathways required to advance the project.

This phase of work produced the preferred alignment and design concept that now forms the basis of advanced design and business case development for the extension to UBC.
