Sponsorship 101 guidance and workshop for Metrolinx

Metrolinx introduced the Sponsor function in late 2017 to guide major projects through their lifecycle, manage and protect benefits, and ensure the right project is delivered. Their approach to Sponsorship has rapidly developed since. In May 2023, a re-established Role of the Sponsor was launched to provide Sponsors with clear understanding of the six key accountabilities and responsibilities of a Sponsor. Since then, Metrolinx has continued to invest in building Sponsor capabilities, including developing a guidebook, "Sponsorship 101: A Guide to Sponsorship at Metrolinx” ("Sponsorship 101").

Access Planning staff has direct experience establishing the Sponsor function at Metrolinx and has also develop enhanced tools in previous assignments for the Sponsor Office. The team was hired to provide a comprehensive third-party peer review of the Sponsorship 101 document and lead an engagement workshop with Sponsor staff to ensure alignment on the priorities and themes covered in the document.

The Access Planning team leveraged their sponsorship expertise and experience to guide their review, with consideration for organization specific processes, governance, procedures, and capabilities. Examples of key themes covered includes leadership and how to triage the most important decisions, tactical benefits management advice, how to complete a readiness review, and the sponsor role in developing the project estimate. The team provided advice and recommendations for shaping the Sponsorship 101 document to make it a user-friendly and practical guide for current and aspiring Sponsors at Metrolinx.
