Supporting the growth of bike sharing in Toronto

Building on significant growth in recent years, Bike Share Toronto is planning an unprecedented expansion to the system's coverage area to include stations in all 25 wards of the city. To achieve this goal, Bike Share Toronto engaged consultant support to develop a Four-year Growth Plan. This plan is helping to guide the planning process for expanding the Bike Share Toronto system over the next four years and includes recommendations on coverage area, implementation phasing and strategic opportunities.

The consultant team was tasked with producing a spatial analysis and engaging with key stakeholders. Access led the engagement and consultation with partners and stakeholders. Fostering solid relationships with partners through engagement was a key component of this mandate considering the strong reliance of the program on partnerships with external collaborators to implement stations in the most appropriate settings. Access successfully organized and led stakeholder engagement sessions including two rounds of workshops with external partners, a workshop session with bike-share users and the distribution of a user survey. Feedback from these groups was integrated into the spatial analysis and helped prioritize areas of growth that are aligned with public initiatives and future development while considering users’ preferences.

The Four-year Growth Plan was approved in late 2022 and serves as the guidebook to expansion, with new bike share stations being added on a regular basis across the city.
